RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH
In March, 1964, after a huge earthquake jolted much of Alaska, seismic tidal waves or "tsunami" devastated Kodiak and Old Harbor. Only the blue-domed Orthodox Church and two other buildings survived; everything else had to be rebuilt. Housing was constructed in stages under the auspices of HUD.

Sven's father is the local HUD representative, and one of Old Harbor's leading citizens. In the early 1960's, seeing that non-native state officials were selling off traditional hunting and fishing grounds, Sven Sr. promoted the idea of native land rights. His efforts helped to lay the groundwork for the 1971 Native Claims Act.
