MYSTERIES
Sven got his start in archaeology working at local sites with Ben and Bill Fitzhugh. Ben has been doing his PhD research on Sitkalidak. He's found stone blades, projectile points, knives, an oil lamp, and other artifacts in the red ocher-stained soil. Charcoal samples have led him to date the site at 5,000 BC.

Ben believes the early Alaskan sites are related to similar Mesolithic and Neolithic sites in Siberia -- ones we explored on our journey. It's now clear that Kodiak's cultural history stretches back to an early period of human settlement in the Americas. We no longer view the arrival of Alaska's coastal peoples -- or those of the nearby Northwest Coast -- as recent events in North American prehistory.
