DIRING
Machonov's Diring project began more than a decade ago; at one
point, 120 workers were employed at the site. While most
archaeologists believe late Pleistocene man first ventured into the
Siberian high arctic about 15,000 years ago, Machonov believes that
his Diring excavations show conclusively that the area was inhabited
much earlier.
