DIRING
Machonov's Diring project began more than a decade ago; at one point, 120 workers were employed at the site. While most archaeologists believe late Pleistocene man first ventured into the Siberian high arctic about 15,000 years ago, Machonov believes that his Diring excavations show conclusively that the area was inhabited much earlier.
