Hoping to meet with colleagues in Yakutsk, Dr. Fitzhugh visited various
"institutes." No fewer than five were housed in one building. The prize
for the longest and most original name must go to "The Institute on
Problems of North National Minorities of the Siberian Branch of the
Russian Academy of Sciences." Its director is a Yakut ethnologist named
Vasily Robbeck; he deals with the social problems facing
native peoples
in the north, where we're headed next.
As we headed for for the airport to fly north, the sun finally
broke through the grey pall which had settled over Yakutsk for several
days. More on our journey next week....
