Just a few kilometers from the town sits the ruins of a gulag camp from the Stalin era. Hundreds of thousands of prisoners were once ensconced there. Using shovels and pickaxes, they cleared acres of forest to construct the unpaved "trans-Siberian highway" connecting Moscow and Magadan.
