Standing on a rocky outcrop, Bill Fitzhugh picks up some stones and tries to determine if they are tools. After a few minutes he turns and is off again, making his way higher up the steep slope. I finally catch up with Bill about twenty minutes later and ask for his assessment of the site.

"It's unlikely anyone would have lived up here, but certainly this is an excellent lookout point. People could have watched for game, or gotten the lay of the land," he said. "From here you can see the entire surrounding area. And part of our objective is to get a feel for the land and the potential for dig sites." Apart from isolated excavations, little archaeological work has been done in this region for more than a hundred years.
