Provideniya is rich in archaeological treasures. We made our way to Plover --
Provideniya's most famous site, named for a whaler -- on one of the small
barges that ferries people and goods around the area.
Originally settled by Eskimos, Plover is full of
cache
pits, used by early Eskimos to store meat and other
provisions.
Minutes after arriving, Bill Fitzhugh found an old walrus jaw lying
right inside one of the pits.
