The jagged, rocky coastline of Russia faded into the fog behind us as we flew out of Provideniya. I looked down at the fog-shrouded coast and spotted flocks of seabirds; a sounding whale parted the waters of the strait. I realized that things had changed very little since Vitus Bering and other explorers first sailed through the strait.

We flew right over the Diomedes and King Island. All at once, the brown hills of the Seward Peninsula burst out of thick cloud cover. We could see Nome in the distance.
