The jagged, rocky coastline of Russia faded into the fog behind us as
we flew out of Provideniya. I looked down at the
fog-shrouded coast and spotted flocks of seabirds; a sounding whale parted the
waters of the strait. I realized that things had changed very little since
Vitus Bering
and other explorers first sailed through the strait.
We flew right over the Diomedes and King Island. All at once, the brown hills
of the Seward Peninsula burst out of thick cloud cover. We could see Nome in
the distance.
