"For me, Bering Strait is larger than the sum of its parts," Bill commented.
"Together, Alaska and Chukotka participated in developments that led to the
origins of Eskimo cultures. It happened through innovations and contacts of
peoples solving problems, not as a result of military invasions. Reindeer
herders moved from the Lena River valley east toward the strait, until they
reached the maritime coastal peoples. Throughout history we have seen the
importance of the free movements of peoples, ideas, and materials. This is the
lesson of our trip to the New World." |
