Given Kodiak's abundant resources, I asked Sven why he had gone around the world to study reindeer herders in western Siberia. "To gain a new perspective, and make more sense of things back here at home," Sven said quietly.

I realized just how much I had learned travelling with Bill, Sven, Shane, Marc [video], and the entire team. I will never look at hillsides or "mounds" in the same way again; now I know that even the most innocuous places may hold clues to the ancient past. The quest for those clues consumes entire lifetimes. We probably will never know exactly from whence we came. But each year, people like Bill Fitzhugh and Sven Haakanson discover a little more about our roots, helping us make sense of our origins.
