We arrived in waves at this remote city in central Siberia (map). I was coming from the closest point -- Moscow, six time zones away -- yet somehow I managed to be the first to arrive. I spotted expedition leader Shane Lundgren and photographer Marc Bryan-Brown at the rundown airport in Yakutsk -- a remote Siberian city that serves as our jumping-off point. The pair had made it to the baggage claim with a small mountain of equipment. They were at wit's end.

Dr. Bill Fitzhugh finally arrived in Yakutsk late the following night. Turns out he got bogged down by bureaucracy as well: regional airports close on weekends. So he had to sit through two perfectly sunny days, waiting for Monday morning...which, inevitably, was grey and overcast.
