We get our first view of the Arctic Ocean as our two biplanes fly over the tundra of the northern Chukotka region. The northern horizon is bluish-grey except for the white patches: icebergs. As winter approaches, polar ice will stretch clear to the shoreline. The other biplane skirts through occasional clouds, then passes back out into bright spots of sunshine. Soon we are flying in tandem, crossing back and forth along the shoreline.
