DIOMEDES
Although they are only three miles apart, the Diomede islands are separated by both an international dateline and the Russian/American border. The western island belongs to Russia; the other is American.

Most of the islands' natives are related by blood, and have always been able to travel back and forth with no interference from Washington or Moscow. Native peoples can now traverse the strait without visas, although there are indications that Russian authorities may crack down in the near future.
