Moments after we touched down in Nome, Shane bent down to kiss the ground in
celebration of his deliverance from Russia's bureaucracy. Our two An-2's
remained behind, trapped by red tape; the FAA denied us permission to fly the
aircraft into Alaska.
In the end we had no choice but to cross the strait in a Cobra twin-engine
aircraft chartered by a group of American anthropologists. We were the last to
see this team alive: soon afterwards, the entire group perished at sea.
