SHANE
The fate of the American anthropologists in Provideniya has left
its mark on Shane.
Summing up our trip in his journal, Shane
wrote: "The far eastern
regions of Siberia which we traversed were like the last outposts of the Roman
Empire -- left to fend for themselves.... The endless spaces were hauntingly
beautiful, but the thought of trying to survive in these areas was not
pleasant. The changing light as sun rays and rain showers swept over our
wings, and the thrill of maneuvering around our partner aircraft were moments
that we paid for so dearly. In the end, it is the warmth and concern of
individuals who were kind to us and invited us into their homes and lives that
will remain with us forever." |
